It is recommended that you call a professional garage door company to
perform a spring change. Spring changes
are dangerous and can cause serious injury. Spring
changes generally run between $115.00 for a
single spring change and $200.00 for a double spring change. If
you are asked to pay more than $200.00 you might want to call around and
check with other companies. Prices will vary of course based on where you live.
Garage door springs come in 2 types, "Torsion Springs and Extension Springs". While extension springs are generally easier to change than torsion springs, a torsion spring is safer and will operate your door smoother and more evenly. First lets determine the type of spring you have. Torsion springs are generally located above the door and mounted to the wall with a bracket. You may have a single spring or a double spring based on the weight of the door. Below left is a picture of a single torsion spring that is broken and on the right a double spring.
Extension springs are located along the horizontal tracks on both sides. When the door is in the down position the springs are extended and when the door is in the up position the springs are relaxed. All extension springs should have a safety cable running through the spring so that in the event the spring breaks it will stay on the cable. If there is no cable and the spring breaks while the door is in the down position the spring will go flying across the garage and hit anything in its way.
