There are 2 different types of bottom seal on most garage doors.  The rubber seal allows the door to seal with the ground to keep out water and debris.  These seals can provide anywhere from 1 to 4 1/2 inches of compression.

If you have level concrete the normal 3 or 3 1/2 inch seal works just fine.  If you have a low spot or uneven concrete you can choose from several different sizes to get the compression you need to fill the gap.

On wooden doors the bottom seal is generally nailed to the bottom side of the door.

On metal doors and some wooden doors there is an aluminum retainer that has either a single or double track or slot on the bottom.

With a metal retainer on the bottom it is possible to utilize different widths of bottom seal to achieve a better seal.

Garage doors are generally 1 1/2 inches or 2 inches thick.  If you have an older wooden door and the door does not seal you can put the metal retainer on the bottom of the door and then use any size bottom rubber to fill the void.  The bottom retainers come in both 2 inch and 1 1/2 inch widths.  Simply affix the retainer on the bottom of the door and slide the rubber weather seal through the slots on the bottom.
